“My friend Godfrey Sprague used to go down to Guatemala years ago and put his body on the line accompanying people going to the polls in a volatile time,” says Harvey Schachter, who wrote The Altruistic Spirit. “My admiration for him — he died a couple of years ago of natural causes — and others with such fearless commitment to democracy, was the seed for a desire to illuminate how Kingstonians defend and enhance democracy.”

“I live in a house that vibrates with music,” says author of Music in the City, Josephine Matyas, who is married to a local musician. “And there isn’t a day that I regret opening our door to welcome many of Kingston’s fine talent into our home for a rehearsal or a last-minute jam session.” For Matyas, finding great musicians for this article was the easy part. Resisting the temptation to fill volumes writing about them all proved to be much more of a challenge.

Jordan Press, author of The Derby Girls, explored the growing sport of roller derby in Kingston, but he hasn’t seen his inline skates in years and has never put on a pair of roller skates. So, does he think he can compete in roller derby? “Nope,” he says. “I’ll leave the sport to the women in Kingston dedicated to making it flourish. Besides, I haven’t decided on a good derby name for myself.”
